In Search of Dinner
On this evening, we were riding our bikes along the river when we saw these two fisherman out in the middle of the river a couple of hundred yards away. Luckily, the river is only knee deep, but the rocks very slippery. Not wanting to miss out on the shot, I waded into the water in my tennis shoes and slowly made my way over to them. I was in luck; the sky exploded with color behind them. If you look closely, you can see that the fisherman on the left also has a bird perched on the front of his raft, but because of the peak in the background, and the darkness, it blends in and is hard to see. It was a beautiful evening.
These are Cormorant Fisherman. They put a ring around the bird's neck so that when it dives for and catches a fish, it cannot swallow it. The bird returns to the bamboo raft and the fisherman pulls the fish out of the bird's mouth. At the end of the fishing excursion, the fisherman will feed the Cormorant for its work. This is an ancient tradition, which unfortunately, has become quite rare, as younger men can find higher paying work elsewhere rather than fishing.
